Jokowi Repeats Soeharto's Victory: Agriculture Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo even said President Joko Widodo or Jokowi repeated the success of President Soeharto regarding rice self-sufficiency. The statement came after Indonesia received a Certificate of Acknowledgment from the International Rice Research Institution (IRRI) for achieving rice self-sufficiency.

Syahrul said IRRI also recognized Indonesia's success in developing agriculture and food systems as well as in implementing rice technology and innovation.

“Today, we repeated Indonesia's glory of 36 years ago. In 1984, Pak Harto (Soeharto) received an award for rice self-sufficiency from the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization). And today, in Pak Jokowi’s era, we repeat it,” said Syahrul in a statement, Monday, August 15, 2022.

The minister emphasized that it was a valuable award honored by IRRI, which is the world's premier research organization.

“IRRI recognizes the hard work of governors, regents, heads of agencies, farmers, and all stakeholders [to achieve rice self-sufficiency],” he said.

The rice self-sufficiency declared by IRRI, said Syahrul, is evident from the availability of national rice stocks. The data used as the basis for IRRI is the 2022 National Rice Reserve Survey (SCBN) belonging to the Agriculture Ministry and the Statistics Indonesia (BPS).
