TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police's special counterterrorism squad, Densus 88, arrested a suspected terrorist in Magetan, East Java. The man is suspected to be affiliated with Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) and Dulmatin, who was allegedly one of the masterminds behind the 2002 Bali bombings.
The suspect, RY a.k.a. D, was arrested on Tuesday morning, August 2. Brig. Gen. Ahmad Ramadhan, head of Public Information at the Indonesian Police Public Relations Division, said the suspect enrolled in the selection to become a member of JI's international relations division in 2013.
The suspect had traveled to Syria via Dubai to "open links with the Free Syrian Army group and joined their military training," Ahmad Ramadhan said in a press conference earlier today.
The suspect became a member of JI's international relations division in 2015 and returned to Syria via Istanbul to build relations with the Jabhat Al Nusra or Al-Nusra Front, a terrorist organization that fought against the Syrian government in the Civil War. In Syria, the suspect was captured by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
"The suspect also has direct connections to Yemen with the role of creating a path for JI's relationship with Al Qaeda to conduct training in Syria," he said.
Ahmad Ramadhan said that the suspect had also been in contact with Dulmatin in Magetan. Dulmatin was a senior figure in Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) and the alleged mastermind of the 2002 Bali bombings. Dulmatin was killed during a police raid in Pamulang in March 2010.
