TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) seismographs on Wednesday morning, July 27, detected a magnitude 6.9 destructive earthquake in the Philippines.
“The earthquake was detected by our equipment spread across 428 locations,” said Daryono, Head of BMKG disaster mitigation and earthquake coordinator on July 27.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake happened at 07:43 Indonesia Western Time (WIB), the earthquake was measured at a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale with its epicenter detected at Luzon Island.
The quake was considered to be a shallow one as the hypocenter was measured at 17 kilometers below the ground, which was caused by active fault movements. “This is predicted to be followed by a series of aftershocks,” said Daryono.
The BMKG detection system found the earthquake to be caused by an oblique thrust fault with an intensity measured at level VIII on the MMI scale.
“The earthquake was also felt up to the Philippines capital of Manila which is 330 kilometers away,” Daryono explained.
