TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi inaugurated Sarinah Mall in Jakarta, which has been completely renovated. The event was also attended by former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri and the House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani.
Two sons of the first Indonesian President Soekarno were also present, namely Guruh Soekarnoputra and Guntur Soekarnoputra. The state head paid his respects to all of Bung Karno's family at the event.
"Alhamdulillah, today we can see the new face of Sarinah," said the President at the inauguration ceremony on Thursday, July 14, 2022.
Jokowi said that Sarinah Mall is a vital icon of the nation which holds memories from generation to generation. Jokowi recalled his visits to the first city's shopping center around 1973-1974 with his grandfather.
"At that time, only Sarinah that has an escalator. I went up and down back then. I remember it very well, I was very happy," Jokowi said.
Jokowi also stated that the Sarinah Mall was initiated by President Soekarno with a noble mission: "to trade in domestic goods. This is what we will continue," he underlined.
