TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted a number of areas in North Sulawesi today, July 14, at 09:58 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). Centered at sea, the quake was felt strong at level IV of the MMI scale in Kotamobagu.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) updated its data that the quake’s epicenter was 57 kilometers southeast of Bolaang Uki in South Bolaang Mongondow with a depth of 83 kilometers.
“The quake was from the Tomini Bay area,” said the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, Bambang Setiyo Prayitno, in a written statement.
He explained that the quake was generated by the subduction activity of the Maluku Sea plate.
Other than in Kotamobagu, the shaking was felt in East Bolaang Mongondow Regency and South Minahasa Regency at MMI scale level III-IV, as well as in Tomohon and the neighboring areas including Gorontalo City and Regency at MMI scale level II-III.
“And the modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami,” said Bambang, adding that no aftershocks were recorded.
