TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan officially changed the names of several roads and zones to historical Batavian figures. He said the figures played beneficial roles for the capital city and Indonesia.
“They are individuals whom we remember because they brought benefits to others,” said Anies in his speech at the Jagakarsa Batavian Cultural Village Management Unit Office, South Jakarta, on Monday, June 20, 2022.
He explained that the figures were worth remembering as they spent their lives for the city's progress. Some of them have been declared national heroes, but many of the meritorious names have not been recorded as ones.
The former minister of education and culture said that the names of MH Thamrin, Abdurahman Saleh, Ismail Marzuki, and H Noer Ali already existed in the Batavian Cultural Village. However, there are more Batavian scholars such as HM Saleh Ishak, Sheikh Juned Al Batawi, Ahmad Suhaimi, H Darip, Entong Fat, and Kyai Mursalim who have not been widely known by the public.
“As well as Guru Makmun, Habib Ali bin Ahmad, and KH Usman Perak who were among [Batavian] scholars,” he added.
Anies Baswedan also mentioned a number of Batavian champions whose presence was remembered across time, viz. Pitung, Rama Ratu Jaya, Imam Syafii, and Aki Tirem. There were also legendary humanists and artists namely Bokir, Rohim S, Mpok Nuri, Ki Sam Jiun, Mahbub Junaidi, Raden Ismail, and musician Muhammad Mashabi.
