TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shopee Indonesia executive director Handhika Jahja clarified the recent news about the company's operations in a number of countries, specifically concerning massive layoffs. Jahja assured that the business decisions taken in overseas branches do not involve the Indonesian branch.
Handhika reassured people that the Indonesian branch office will not lay off its 20,000 workers. Handhika said that Shopee Indonesia will continue to showcase positive performance and that Indonesia will continue to be the company's top priority market.
"[I can assure] that the adjustments made across certain markets and segments do not involve Shopee Indonesia," said Handhika on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, as quoted by Bisnis.com.
Concerns over the massive layoff were raised following headlines reporting about mass layoffs carried out by Shopee's parent company and the company's withdrawal from Spain.
Moreover, Handhika said that the company is still actively recruiting digital talents through the Sea Labs Indonesia which was introduced by President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi back in March 2022. The program's goal is to build a team consisting of 1,000 Indonesian digital talents, especially engineers and product managers, that will be ready to contribute through technology.
