TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo welcomed a number of athletes and coaches performing in the 2021 Vietnam SEA Games at Jakarta Merdeka Palace, Monday, June 13, 2022. He also handed out a total bonus of Rp162.5 billion for them.
“We are today giving bonus awards to athletes, coaches, and assistant coaches. For athletes, it (the total bonus) is around Rp130,500,000,000 while for coaches and assistant coaches at Rp32,000,000,000,” said the President today.
On this occasion, Jokowi also expressed appreciation for the policy of the Youth and Sports Ministry in reducing the number of athletes competing and for the medals won by athletes at the Southeast Asian biennial multi-sport event.
“Out of 499 athletes, 408 athletes all won medals; silver, gold, bronze,” he added.
He opined that Indonesia’s achievement in Hanoi was quite good as the country focused on getting results and not sending too many athletes.
“What Pak Menpora (Sports Minister) said is true that building a good ecosystem indeed produces good results. We don't have to send as many athletes as possible, but the results increase,” the state head said.
Jokowi also hoped that the bonuses could motivate other athletes to make the nation proud in the international arena.
The Indonesian contingent was ranked third at the 2021 SEA Games Vietnam with a total of 241 medals, comprising 69 gold, 91 silver, and 136 bronze medals. This was Indonesia's highest number of medals in the history of participating in the SEA Games.
