TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The North Sumatra Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) announced the release of the pair of Sumatran tigers from the Barumun Sumatran Tiger Sanctuary to the Kerinci Seblat National Park. The wildlife reintroduction process took two days, June 7-8.
Head of the North Sumatra BKSDA Irzal Azhar in a written statement said the release of the two tigers named Surya Manggala and Citra Kartini was also in commemoration of the World Environment Day on June 5 and preventing inbreeding that could potentially decrease the genetic qualities of future tigers in the sanctuary.
“I am hopeful that the two Sumatran tigers will be able to adapt post-release. Survive and breed naturally in their natural habitat,” said Irzal, Antaranews reported.
The tigers spent roughly 3.5 years at the Barumun sanctuary prior to their release. The pair were nursed along with their parent there.
