TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Local residents living along the river in West Jakarta, known as Cengkareng Drain, were shocked by the sighting of a crocodile casually roaming the body of water, which was documented by locals and went viral online. Another sighting of what is believed to be the same crocodile also emerged 7 kilometers apart in the Kapuk Kamal area.
A member of the North Jakarta environmental and water agency confirmed the presence of the wildlife, which was sighted multiple times.
The Jakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has partnered with the city’s fire department in searching for the crocodile since Monday, June 6.
BKSDA Jakarta regional II head, Dian Banjar Agung, said explained in a text message to Tempo on June 7; “The location is right on the banks of the river in Kemiri Market, North Kembangan Village, Kembangan District, West Jakarta."
"Today we are trying to trace back. We're trying to set a trap net. However, we are still looking at the condition of the field," he said. "We are trying to re-comb the location to find the right location to install it, according to the last sighting."
