TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Democrat Party spokesman Herzaky Mahendra Putra questioned the effectiveness of the 90-day campaign period for the 2024 General Elections as agreed by the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the central government.
“It's not about 120 or 90 days that should be debated. But whether there is enough time for the people to recognize and explore the offers of change for the fate of the people and this country conveyed by candidates of national leaders during campaign,” said Herzaky in a written statement on Monday, May 30, 2022.
He asserted that the space for campaigning, conveying vision and mission, big ideas, and work programs of each pair of presidential and vice-presidential candidates should really be wide open. “The 2024 election belongs to the people,” he remarked.
The election is a gamble for Indonesian democracy, whether to move forward or crawl backward as in the past few years. The 2024 presidential election is a very important momentum for the nation and state. Moreover, he added, the people hoped that the country can recover soon after the pandemic through the election.
“[The election] is not an arena for making slanders and hoaxes which sharpen polarization and perpetuate divisions between the nation's children,” he emphasized.
He also hoped that KPU made the decision related to the 2024 General Elections by taking into account the substance and prioritizing the objectives of the election, not just practical elements or efforts to suppress the budget. “Let alone following the government's wishes only. Because the KPU's independence to run elections honestly and fairly is protected by law,” the Democrat Party politician concluded.
