TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former governor of South Sumatra, Alex Noerdin, was indicted with a 20 years prison sentence in the case of alleged corruption in natural gas purchase by Regional Mining and Energy Company (PDPDE) in 2010-2019 and the grant funds for the construction of Sriwijaya Great Mosque in Palembang.

"We demand a prison sentence of 20 years for defendant Alex Noerdin with a fine of Rp1 billion or 6 months of subsidiary imprisonment," the Public Prosecutor (JPU) of the Attorney General's Office, who was accompanied by a team of prosecutors from the South Sumatra High Court, said at the Palembang District Court, Wednesday, May 25.

The prosecutor also demanded the defendant pay compensations; US$3.2 million for the South Sumatra PDPDE case, and Rp4.8 billion in the Sriwijaya Grand Mosque construction grant case.

"The compensations must be paid with the condition that, if they are not paid within one month after the case, all of the defendant's assets will be confiscated. If the value of the assets is insufficient, it will be replaced with 10 years in prison," the public prosecutor read their indictment before the panel of judges chaired by Judge Yoserizal.

The defendant, who appeared in court online via link, said that he—through his defense counsel—will file a defense note at the next trial. "We ask the judge to provide us with time to prepare the defense," he said.

The trial will continue on Thursday next week, June 2, at the Palembang District Court, with the agenda of hearing the defense's argument.

At the previous trial, the public prosecutor's team stated that they found irregularities in the alleged corruption case of the South Sumatra PDPDE, resulting in a financial state loss of US$30.19 million according to the Supreme Audit Agency BPK.

At the time, defendant Alex Noerdin was the Governor of South Sumatra and Chairman of the South Sumatra PDPDE's Supervisory Board.

The case has three other defendants: Muddai Madang, former director of PT Dika Karya Lintas Nusa (private investor company) and former director of PT PDPDE Gas; Caca Ica Saleh, as former president director of PDPDE and former president director of PT PDPDE Gas; and A Yaniarsyah Hasan, former director of PDPDE and former director of PT Dika Karya Lintas Nusantara.
