TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - University students joining the Indonesian Student Alliance (AMI) failed to meet President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo in today’s demonstration at the Arjuna Wijaya Horse Statue, Central Jakarta, April 21. They took to the streets from 2 p.m. until 5.30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time.
“Today, President Jokowi and VP Ma'ruf Amin did not come to meet us. We actually wanted to meet and convey our demands directly to the President and also the Vice President, but they did not meet us,” said Vice President of Trisakti Student Board, Niha Nihaya, as AMI representatives in the Monas area, Central Jakarta, Thursday, April 21.
Despite failing to meet Jokowi, Niha said her organization would not give up expressing their voices. She added that AMI planned to hold another rally until the demands reached the state head.
“We have decided today that our spirit will not stop here, our spirit will continue to persist, and we still have a long way to go,” Niha remarked.
Thousands of students ended the demonstration and dispersed themselves in an orderly fashion. There had been tension when a group of students blocked the road access yet the students’ coordinator managed to calm them without chaos.
