Chinese Foreign Workers Don Military-like Uniforms; Immigration Clarifies

TEMPO.CO, Meulaboh Head of the West Aceh’s Meulaboh Non Immigration Checkpoints (TPI) of the Immigraton Office, Azhar, responded to a viral video showing Chinese foreign workers donning a military uniform which caused public unrest.

“The military-like uniform worn by a foreign worker in the construction project of Nagan Raya Aceh PLTU (coal-fired power plants) is the labor uniform in China,” clarified Azhar in Meulaboh, Tuesday, April 19.

He explained that this had been confirmed after the Meulaboh Immigration coordinated with the Military District Command (Kodim) 0116 Nagan Raya and a number of other related parties.

The military-style uniform donned by the Chinese worker at the PLTU 3-4 Nagan Raya construction site, in Suak Puntong Village, Kuala Pesisir District, was reportedly brought from China when he visited Indonesia for work. On Sunday, April 17, however, he wore the uniform and was filmed by his friend which then went viral on social networking sites.

In order to prevent a similar event from recurring, the Meulaboh Immigration officers and Kodim 0116 Nagan Raya, Aceh, reminded the management of the company hiring foreign workers to no longer allow such uniforms similar to military attire.

“So it will not lead to negative interpretations from the public and prevent negative opinions in the community,” said Azhar.
