TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Students Executive Boards' Alliance, or BEM SI, claimed that they sent a letter informing their plan to stage a protest on April 11, to the police. In the letter, BEM SI said that 1,000 people will take to the street and stage a rally on that day.
"We did it (sent the letter). As for the report yesterday on Friday (April 8), the letter about the rally was submitted and it was received well, so hopefully, it will be safe [to stage the rally]. There will be around 1,000 people from campuses. And they are spread; some are from the regions who will come to the center, ” said the media coordinator of BEM SI, Luthfi Yufrizal when contacted on April 9.
Lutfi iterated that the letter was sent to the Jakarta Metro Police, saying that they will stage a peaceful protest.
“We have no intention to be chaotic or anarchic during the action, let us call on each other to the police to also not being anarchic, don’t damage public facilities and be aware of those who want to make chaos in the act; it must be screened thoroughly," he said.
He also said that the students will abide by the rule of demonstration time, hoping that the police would not forcefully disperse the mass before the time as regulated by the law.
