TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani in a written statement on Thursday, April 7, assures that the sexual violence crimes Bill or RUU TPKS will be soon passed into law after the House legislation board conceded the Bill’s level I discussions will be taken to level II.
“The TPKS Bill will be brought to level II discussions to be ratified at the nearest DPR Plenary. One more step, the result of this long struggle will be made a reality,” said the Speaker.
She insists that the Bill represents the commitment from legislators and government to fight for the victims of sexual violence crimes who had their rights neglected.
Maharani also acknowledged the contribution from activists, NGOs, academics, and the general public who have pushed for it and contributed in the formulation of the Bill.
The DPR Speaker hopes that the TPKS Bill will become a state instrument that will be able to handle, protect, and help recover the victims of sexual violence.
This Bill is generally appreciated by many groups as it accommodates input from civilian coalitions such as including trust fund for the victims and oversees electronic-based sexual violence. However, there are aspects that many deem need improvements as the Bill has not blatantly covered cases regarding rape and forceful abortion.
