TEMPO.CO, Lombok - Kuta Mandalika area was flooded on Tuesday afternoon, March 22, just two days after the 2022 Mandalika MotoGP on Sunday.
Kuta Village Head Mirata said the flooding occurred around 17:00 Central Indonesian Time (WITA) after long heavy rains from 12:00 to 14:00 WITA.
“Hundreds of houses were submerged,” said Mirata today, Wednesday, March 23.
He outlined that four hamlets were affected by one-meter-high flooding, namely Mong, Emate, Merendeng, and Batu Riti.
Other than high-intensity rainfall, he opined that the flood was also attributable to the land conversion of the hills and protected forests in the region, including Bukit Lenser and Mong, into cornfields and Mandalika Circuit.
The narrowing of river flows and irrigation channels were also considered to be the cause of the flooding.
Mirata explained that the floodwater had receded on Tuesday night yet a puddle of mud still covered Kuta Mandalika Village. West Nusa Tenggara or NTB Governor Zulkiflimansyah had visited the flooded areas. “Heavy equipment was mobilized in to lift the pile of mud,” he added.
