TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Ministry said Boeing 737-800 NG jets are still being operated in Indonesia following the plane crash of China Eastern Airlines in the mountains in southern China's Guangxi.
“Boeing 737-800 aircraft will continue to operate as usual in Indonesia and the checking process will continue as part of the regular audits carried out by inspectors of the airworthiness and aircraft operations unit,” said the ministry's Air Transport Director-General Novie Riyanto on Tuesday, March 22.
The jet is operated by flag carrier Garuda Indonesia. In 2020, the firm has 73 aircraft units, but that number dropped to 42 in 2020. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Garuda relocated its aircraft in line with the drop in passengers traffic.
Other than Garuda, aircraft of the same type are owned by other domestic airlines, namely Lion Air Group and Sriwijaya Air Group.
Novie said as the national civil aviation regulator, the ministry continues to improve supervision for aviation safety and security. He claimed to have intense communication with domestic airlines and made sure of operator compliance with flight safety regulations.
The Transportation Ministry, Novie added, is still monitoring the situation development of the air crash in China, “until there is sufficient and clear information to issue policies, especially on air transportation.”
