TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has planned on spending USD1.6 billion on new ships in pursuit of greener business in ten years. There will be at least 69 additional ships procured through acquisition and total assembly.
PIS CEO Erry Widiastono said his fleet would increase from the present 95 to 164 units. He added the company would implement the green shipping program focusing on ship development and management.
“PIS, as a company that commits to environmental recovery, and in line with its business expansion, is supportive of the implementation of ESG in its operations and businesses, among which by ushering in eco-friendly ship technology,” he said in a release on Friday, February 18, 2022.
He said this technology sought to cut back on ship emissions, and that PIS ships that operate on low-sulphur fuel could help reduce emissions.
Erry said two of PS carriers, the Pertamina Pride and the Pertamina Prime, had already adopted the technology. “The development of PIS new ships will also employ the technology of eco-friendly ships,” he explained.
According to him, PIS has also strived for energy efficiency by slashing its docking time and committing to the Energy Efficiency Existing Index to suppress emissions.
Erry said 75 percent or 54 ships of the total 94 ships that PIS owned had been evaluated.
