Papua Police Commence Investigation Following Deadly Riot in Sorong

25 January 2022 16:07 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national police are currently investigating the cause of a deadly riot that broke out in the West Papuan city of Sorong, which killed 19 people. Police are hunting down the perpetrators and a possible single individual who might have sparked the tragedy.

“We are conducting an investigation to reveal the intellectual actor and other suspects from the two clashing groups,” said national police spokesperson Insp. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo on January 25.

So far, a number of possible suspects have been interrogated along with conducting crime scene investigations.

Upon preventing a recurrence, police have urged public figures and religious leaders of the West Papua city to be involved in mediating representatives of the two groups in conflict.

“The East Sorong police are holding a meeting to accommodate the two groups,” said Dedi.

Clashes between two groups of people occurred at a karaoke parlor in Sorong, in the early hours of Tuesday, January 25. Nineteen people died in the incident. One person died in the clashes, while 18 others died because they were trapped in a karaoke building that was set on fire.
