TEMPO.CO, JakartaCoordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan claimed the emergency period of electricity caused by the supply shortage of coal had ended. He said the current supply of coal for steam power plants (PLTU) owned by state-owned electricity firm PLN and Independent Power Producer (IPP) is running smoothly.

“There seems to be no problem now, the emergency period has ended,” Luhut told reporters on Friday, January 7.

The government divided its two main focuses in resolving the coal supply crisis for domestic power plants; securing domestic supplies and seeking a permanent solution to prevent the supply crisis from recurring.

Luhut said the ministry would continue meeting with stakeholders today to determine long-term solutions related to energy fuel supply. “We also proposed a new formula that will be studied by the team. We have to make a decision at 2 p.m.,” he said.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources temporarily banned the exports of coal starting January 1 to 31, 2022, following the shortage of coal supply at PLN's steam power plants (PLTU) and IPP power plants that could result in massive blackouts affecting more than 10 million customers.
