TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) said motorized vehicles in Jakarta should no longer use the low octane gasoline known as Premium to reduce air pollution.
“[The owners] should use Pertamax or even Pertamax Turbo which produces lower emissions,” said YLKI chairman Tulus Abadi in a public discussion on transportation services in Jakarta, Wednesday, December 29.
According to him, the worrying air pollution could be aggravated by the use of cheap gasoline such as Premium as it generates higher emissions.
However, Tulus asserted that relevant solutions are necessary to tackle air pollution, including by switching the use of private vehicles to mass transportation. He encouraged transportation service business entities, such as Transjakarta, to create innovation of its bus services.
“Moreover, it is supported by the integration of tariffs, modes, MRT, and LRT which is positive for the transportation management, and consumers must be spoiled by various services,” he opined.
Earlier reported, the government encouraged the public to use Pertalite, a RON 90 fuel, as Indonesia is entering the energy transition period. “Premium RON 88 will be replaced by Pertalite RON 90 before we use eco-friendly gasoline,” said the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry (ESDM) deputy Soerjaningsih in a statement last Wednesday.
The switch from Premium to Pertalite fuel was expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 14 percent, while the switch from Pertalite to Pertamax could possibly suppress the emissions by 27 percent.
