TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said Indonesia has thus far recorded 46 confirmed cases of COVID-19 Omicron variant.
Almost all of them, he said, were international travelers who came home from various countries. The rest were workers at the Wisma Atlet quarantine facility who were infected by the travelers.
“I really ask the public not to go on vacation abroad, except for jobs that force us to go,” said Luhut at a press conference, Monday, December 27.
He advised the public who are wishing to travel to instead visit domestic tourist attractions. Other than being safer from Omicron infections, Luhut went on, traveling domestically would help accelerate the country’s economic recovery.
Luhut said the government would continue to beef up surveillance at the entrance gates to Indonesia and tighten quarantine policy for international travelers in an effort to prevent leaks of Omicron cases at airports and quarantine sites.
“Anticipatory steps have been prepared to deal with the surge in arrivals of international travelers which is expected to occur early next year,” Luhut concluded.
