Corruption Eradication Corps Asked to Focus on Law Enforcement in Police

15 December 2021 08:57 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaResearcher at Gadjah Mada University's Center for Anti-Corruption Studies (Pukat UGM), Zaenur Rohman, said the establishment of the Corruption Eradication Corps by the National Police was worth waiting for. He opined that this corps is the Police’s effort to improve performance in tackling corruption.

Zaenur said the corps could be the police’s contribution to the country in efforts against graft given capable human resources. “Although their presence will not immediately improve the eradication of corruption, this could be a good start,” he said on Tuesday, December 14.

He also believed that the police could apply a number of measures to support the corps, such as giving them strategic cases, especially corruption in the law enforcement sector, both internal and external of the institution, and there should be truth and transparency on the graft case handling involving state development programs.

“So in my opinion, the corps needs to have a strong foundation first,” said Zaenur.

The National Police established a new corps tasked to prevent and eradicate corruption. The members were former Corruption Eradication Corruption (KPK) employees who did not pass the civic knowledge test. Their appointment was noted through Police Regulation No. 15 of 2021.

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) researcher Kurnia Ramadhana shared similar opinions. He argued that the corps should be focused on eradicating fraud in the police. “If the Police are willing and serious in eradicating corruption in their institutions, it (the corps) will be a big contribution for eradicating corruption in this country,” he said.
