TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Public Works and Housing Ministry (PUPR) in a national meeting of nationwide drinking water firms on Wednesday requested local water companies (PDAM) to cut down the use of groundwater to minimize effects of land subsidence.
PUPR representative Diana Kusumastuti mentioned Jakarta and referred to the capital city as a region that is experiencing such environmental issues.
“The constant use of groundwater will lead to groundwater subsidence at a worrying rate like in Jakarta, and that must be prevented,” said Diana, Antaranews reported.
She then mentioned the use of pipelines as one of the alternatives to distribute tap water for members of the public, which is still only 20 percent used. However, she said water pipeline leaks must also be reduced.
Another reason she calls for the use of pipelines is that it can help the profitability of local water companies and help the government by reducing dependence towards government subsidies.
