Pilot Killed as Cargo Plane Crashes at Papua Airport; Co-pilot Survives

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A cargo plane operated by Smart Air on the early morning of Monday crashed at the Aminggu Ilaga Airport located in the Puncak District of Papua. The Puncak Police Chief Commissioner Nyoman Punia confirmed that the accident killed the pilot.
The pilot identified as Kuntardi was initially evacuated to the Ilaga community health center (Puskesmas) before succumbing to his injuries.
Fortunately, the co-pilot Egie is currently conscious but is under intense treatment by the local healthcare facility, Antaranews reported.
Asked separately, the head of the Aminggaru Ilaga Airport Herman Sujito suspects that the pilot was unable to commit to a safe descent caused by the thick fog that formed in the airport’s surrounding area.
Up to publication of this report, no further statements were made regarding the details of the incident. The operation of this Papua airport is temporarily shut down as officials are currently cleaning up the accident scene.
