Jokowi Confident Indonesia Able to Produce Electric Vehicles in 3 Years

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in a video published by the President’s Secretariat Youtube channel on Thursday said he is optimistic that the country will eventually be able to produce electric vehicles (EV) within the next two or three years. 

The President explained that stopping the export of raw nickel material will be the first step towards this goal and that integrating the Krakatau steel industry with the lithium battery and automotive industries. 

“We must stop exporting the raw material of nickel. We will force State-owned Enterprises (SOEs), private sector, or investors to build the industry in this country,” said Jokowi. 

The video explains how the latest Krakatau Steel latest production feature in the form of a hot strip milling manufacturing is able to produce metal sheets for car bodies. 

Apart from planning to stop the exports of raw nickel materials, President Jokowi also intends to curb the exports of coal and mineral commodities and focus on domestically-processed natural resources and introduce added value to this business sector.
