Introducing New Covid-19 Restriction Terms; PPKM Level 4, Level 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has officially decided to extend the emergency public activity restriction or emergency PPKM for five more days until July 25 which comes after the issuance of the Home Affairs Minister’s Instruction No.22/2021 across the islands of Java and Bali.

The official instruction states that a number of regions across two of the most populated islands in Java and Bali are measured by PPKM level 4 and level 3 based on potential Covid-19 transmission spread. Areas classified under these levels must continue restricting public activity until July 25.

From now on regions will be categorized based on their levels with the highest being level 4 and is equivalent to the current emergency PPKM.

PPKM Level 4 is enacted when there are 30 cases of coronavirus hospitalization out of 100 thousand people within one week, 5 deaths out of 100 thousand, and 150 active cases for every 100 thousand within two weeks

The name changes of Covid-19 social restrictions are nothing new in Indonesia’s brief history with the coronavirus as the earliest iteration of a public activity restriction was named the PSBB (large-scale social restriction) implemented on April 17 last year while the second terminology used was simply Java-Bali PPKM.

However, as of February 2021, the government introduced yet another name for its restriction with slightly different enforcements that came in the Micro PPKM and lastly the Emergency PPKM which is meant to reduce the growing number of Covid-19 cases following the Eid al-Fitr holidays and mass-exodus tradition.
