TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Information under President Soeharto, Harmoko, died at the age of 82 on Sunday, July 4, 2021.

"Innalillahi wa innailaihi rojiun, Mr. H. Harmoko bin Asmoprawiro has passed away on Sunday July 4 at 20:22 WIB at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital. Please forgive all his mistakes and ask for prayers, God willing, he will be husnul khotimah. Amen," stated the message received by Tempo.

Harmoko's son, Dimas Azisoko, confirmed this news. "Please forgive all of his mistakes and we ask for prayers [for his sake], God willing, his deeds of worship will be accepted by Allah SWT and husnulkhatimah," Dimas said via a short message.

Harmoko is known to have been sick for several years. In May 2021, Dimas said that his father's health condition was declining due to his old age. At that time, Dimas said that his father could no longer communicate.

Harmoko was a Golkar politician who served as Indonesia's Minister of Information during the New Order era. He was also the chairman of the MPR during the reign of B.J Habibie.

Harmoko was born in Patianrowo, Nganjuk, East Java, February 7, 1939. Harmoko was known as Suharto's right-hand man. However, he was also the one who suggested Suharto resign from the presidency. This was conveyed by Harmoko, who at that time served as Chairman of the DPR/MPR, on May 18, 1998.
