Komnas HAM: Deaths of 4 FPI Members Human Rights Violations

TEMPO.CO, JakartaNational Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) Commissioner Choirul Anam announced that the deaths of four Islamic Defenders Front or FPI members were human rights violations. The commission found that they died while under police surveillance.

“The four people were still alive under the control of state officials, so this incident is a violation of human rights because there was no effort to prevent fatalities. This is unlawful killings,” said Anam on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021.

Anam reiterated that the deaths were different from those of the other two members who were in the same car. The two allegedly died due to the clash and shooting with the police officers.

“So it is a bit different. Two died due to the clash between cars and gunfire, while the four were under the monitoring of state officials. This is a human rights violation,” he remarked.

For the deaths of the four people, Komnas HAM recommended criminal law enforcement in order to uphold justice. Anam argued that the case investigation must not be solely carried out by the police internally.

“But we must enforce the law with a criminal court to obtain the full truth and uphold justice,” said Anam.
