Abu Bakar Ba'asyir Completes 15-year Jail Sentence for Terrorism Charges

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Law and Human Rights on Friday said that Abu Bakar Ba'asyir had been released from the Gunung Sindur correctional on Friday morning, January 8, at 05:30 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
“ABB (Abu Bakar Ba’asyir) has been released after finishing administrations and undergoing health protocols in preventing against Covid-19,” the ministry's spokesperson of correctional institution directorate general Rika Aprianti wrote in a written statement on Friday, Jan. 8.
According to the official statement, Abu Bakar was picked up by family members and a team of lawyers after serving 15-years behind bars for his involvement in the military training camp in Aceh back in 2011. Ba’asyir was considered as the leader of the Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) terrorist cell strongly linked to Al-Qaeda.
