Police: Rizieq Shihab's Billboard Takedowns Due to Legal Violations

27 November 2020 10:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) on Friday said that the takedown of illegal billboards depicting Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader Rizieq Shihab is motivated by nothing else but legal violations against regional regulations (Perda) on public order and provocative contents.

“[The billboards] have violated the local Perda,” wrote Polri spokesperson Insp. Gen. Argo Yuwono in a written statement on Friday, November 27.

The national police issued this clarification to support the illegal billboard crackdown conducted by the Jakarta Military Command (Kodam Jaya). Most billboards depicted the controversial religious figure and messages rallying for a revolution of akhlak (the practice of virtue, morality and manners).

The Jakarta Military Command said they had ‘cleaned up’ 900 illegal makeshift billboards of Rizieq Shihab for the past two months and noted that most were filled with provocative messages.

“What is wrong with Indonesia that they made calls for an akhlak revolution? They (the billboards) contained provocative messages,” said Kodam Jaya’s Lieutenant Colonel Arh Herwin Budi Saputra on November 23.
