Students to Stage Yet Another Protest Against Omnibus Law

15 October 2020 18:56 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Students Executive Boards' Alliance (BEM SI) planned to stage yet another protest on Friday, October 16, in front of the Merdeka Palace, Central Jakarta. The demands remain the same as in Thursday’s rally: revoking the Omnibus Law on Job Creation.

“And urging the President to issue Perpu (a regulation in lieu of law),” said BEM SI media coordinator, Andi Khiyarullah, to Tempo on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

He predicted that far more masses will join the upcoming demonstration. “It is estimated to be more than 6,000 people, far higher than the previous protest,” Andi added.

On Thursday, October 8, students and workers across Indonesia’s cities took to the streets. In Jakarta, the mass from BEM SI flocked the Merdeka Palace. The protest, however, ended in chaos in several areas. Jakarta Police arrested more than a thousand people.

The rally demanding the revocation of the Job Creation Omnibus Law continued. On Monday, October 12, people from the Indonesia Welfare Labor Confederation (KSBSI) held a protest around the Horse Statue, Central Jakarta, followed by the 212 Alumni Brotherhood or PA 212 the day after.
