TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 806 people taking part in the demonstration against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation on October 13, 2020, has been arrested by the police. Among them were elementary school students.
The National Police Head of Public Relations Insp. Gen. Argo Yuwono lamented that the rally participants only joined the act without knowing the reason. They were probed in a number of areas in Jakarta, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Depok.
“We are concerned about this. Moreover, the majority of them only take part in the rally without knowing what they were fighting for,” said Argo in a written statement on Wednesday, October 14.
The police also found that hundreds of protesters were elementary school students. They were nabbed in North Jakarta. Argo said 155 students have been taken to the North Jakarta Resort Police HQ.
“They will be listed and undergo [COVID-19] rapid test,” he added.
According to Argo, the police would brief the 806 protesters before returning them home. The police would also give guidance to parents to prevent their underage children from joining a rally again in the future.
“This requires guidance from all parties, especially parents so their children will not blindly participate in a demonstration. Let alone they do not know what they are fighting for,” Argo said.
