TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The capital city's mass rapid transportation MRT Jakarta introduces 'flood gate' or flood barrier to anticipate flood. The tool will be placed at the gate of MRT underground stations.
The company’s director of operational and maintenance Muhammad Effendi said it will only take less than five minutes to install the barrier. “This tool will be put behind each gate. It will need three people to install for about 4.24 minutes in our simulation," he said Thursday, January 30.
Technically, Effendi went on, MRT’s underground stations will be safe from flooding since they are designed to face the 200-year flood cycle. Besides, they have optimum drainage systems.
Water pumps are also available to anticipate puddles around the station area, as well as the infiltration wells which are built in the facilities.
The flood barrier will be installed if the water level gets higher and starts to puddle one stair. “We’ll set them (the flood barriers) one by one,” Effendi explained.
The tool will be installed in the front of the entrance gates and passengers’ evacuation will take place at the elevated station of MRT Jakarta.
