TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo will inaugurate an underpass tunnel in Yogyakarta today, Friday, January 31. Jokowi arrived in Yogyakarta yesterday to attend the launching ceremony of the longest tunnel in Indonesia.
The underpass lies below Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), running 1.4 kilometers. The official name of the underpass is "Kentungan Tunnel".
The project's construction began in December 2018 using state funds amounting to Rp110 billion.
The underpass was originally scheduled to open at the same time as the Yogyakarta International Airport, set in April. However, the inauguration date was pushed earlier so that the tunnel can be used by the public immediately.
"This is a national road, there is no charge, so we can utilize it first," the Public Works Ministry's commitment-maker official (PPK) for Yogyakarta Province, Muhammad Sidik Hidayat, told Bisnis.com on January 21.
