TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar suspects the Jakarta administration has violated a number of procedures in the city's Monas revitalization program.
“The indications are clearly visible, that the physical work done at Monas (national monument) is not in accordance with the correct procedures. This is where we enter the issue because the trees that were cut down are a form of environmental damage,” said Siti at the State Palace Complex on Tuesday, January 28.
The Jakarta administration has ordered 190 trees to be cut in order to create space for a plaza that is planned to be inside the cultural heritage site. As a response, the KLHK directorate-general of law enforcement has investigated the matter.
“What is the Monas revitalization commenced for, was there any announcements prior, how was the environmental planning mechanism. They can face charges if all of the aforementioned have problems,” said Siti Nurbaya.
The Jakarta administration led by Governor Anies Baswedan could possibly face a variety of sanctions, either administrative sanctions or an official written warning, which depends on the Ministry’s investigation.
