TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police have issued a circular banning the use of firecrackers during the 2020 New Year’s Eve but allow fireworks in celebrating the event.
Metro Jaya Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus said that fireworks, not firecrackers, were allowed in permitted events such as the Ancol New Year’s Eve celebration. He said the ban was for security purposes.
“Those described as fireworks are the ones producing colorful sparks that are aimed upwards. Some blast and some don’t. Their lengths are 2-8 inches,” said Yusri Yunus. “Other than [those] are banned.”
He also announced the city would enforce a car-free night in the areas of Thamrin, Sudirman, up to Senayan from midnight until early dawn.
The Jakarta Metro Police are set to mobilize 10,000 joint personnel with military members to secure areas that are considered as gathering points within the city on New Year's Eve.
