Mount Kerinci's Wednesday Eruption was Phreatic: PVMBG

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that Mount Kerinci’s eruption on Wednesday was followed by dark gray ash column forming directly above its peak signaling it as a phreatic eruption.
“It only produced ash clouds that eventually fell over its crater’s vicinity,” said Nia Haerani, PVMBG’s head of volcano mitigation on Wednesday.
This is said to be the characteristic of Sumatra’s tallest mountain scaling up to 3,805 meters above sea-level. Kerinci on Wednesday was under the level II alert status after it erupted at 12:48 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) 800 meters from its crater.
“We have yet observed [Kerinci] producing incandescent rocks,” said Nia.
The mostly white ash column from Mount Kerinci yesterday signals that it is dominated by gas or water vapor that confirms its phreatic eruption.
