TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police's criminal investigation agency (Bareskrim) cybercrime unit arrested a man identified as SF (25 years old) responsible for video call sex scams. SF tricked unsuspecting individuals to doing video calls to be blackmailed. Police suspected SF to be part of a blackmailing syndicate that managed to siphonmillions of rupiahs from the crime.
"SF was arrested by the police after enough evidence to incriminate him as the individual behind the crime," said Adj. Comm. Zahwani Pandra Arsyad on Friday, February 15, 2019.
SF was arrested in South Sulawesi on February 6, 2019. Police reported that SF would often use fake accounts across popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp to commit the crime.
The suspect would prey on social media users who list their mobile numbers and home address and continue to call his victims and offer his services in exchange for phone credits or money. All of SF victims are male.
SF tricked his victim by playing pornographic videos, seducing his victims to conduct sexual behaviors. He would then unwillingly record the activities of his victims and use the recording as blackmail materials.
"The suspect threatened to spread the recording of the victim if a certain amount of money is not transferred to him," said Pandra who announced that the police are still hunting down other suspects believed to be involved in the scam.
