Boat-sinking Policy Increases Fish Stock, Minister Susi Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Minister Susi Pudjiastuti said that the eradication of illegal fishing committed by foreign flag ships in Indonesia had increased the fish stock in the country. Susi said that fish stock in Indonesian waters until 2018, reached 13.1 million tons.
"From only 12.5 million tons in 2016," Susi said at the Attorney’s General Office in Jakarta on Thursday, Feb. 14.
Meanwhile in 2020, Minister Susi predicted it will reach 14 million tons, resulting in an increase of fish export. It also caused a surplus on the balance of trade of Indonesian fish products in 2018’s Q1 of US$1 billion or Rp14.2 trillion. "It previously experienced trade deficit," she said.
Minister Susi added that the increase was also achieved after the Presidential Regulation No. 44/2016 signed by President Joko “ Jokowi” Widodo was passed. It regulates that only Indonesian fishermen and Indonesian flag vessels who are permitted to catch fish in the Indonesian waters.
Until the first semester of 2018, the total of Indonesia’s export value reached US$ 2.27 billion or increased 12.88 percent compared to the same period in the previous year at US$ 2 billion.
