TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two men attacked police officers at an outpost of North Sumatra Police Headquarters at around 3 am today, June 25. Two were killed in the incident: a perpetrator and a cop. Another attacker is in critical condition.
"Police officer Adj. First Insp. Martua Sigalinging falls from getting stabbed with a sharp object," the National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto told reporters today at Police Headquarters in South Jakarta.
Setyo said that two perpetrators jumped the fence at North Sumatra Headquarters police outpost before attacking the cop.
There are three outposts at North Sumatra Police HQ. Outpost 1 is the entrance of vehicles, outpost 2 is reserved for VIP vehicles, and outpost 3 is an exit and was closed at 6 pm.
"In the morning, portal 3 was closed. People can only pass through portal 1 at night. Two men jumped [the portal] and attacked the outpost occupied by two (cops)," Setyo said.
Setyo explained that the outpost is guarded by four officers but two others were on a patrol. One of the two cops on duty Adj. First Insp. Martua Sigalinging was resting. The perpetrator allegedly stabbed Sigalinging with a sharp object.
His fellow duty officer Brigadier E. Ginting alerted the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) who subsequently chased the perpetrators and fired shots. A perpetrator was killed on the spot and one other is in critical condition.
Setyo revealed that the counterterrorism unit Special Detachment (Densus) 88 had earlier arrested 3 terror suspects on June 6. They allegedly had plotted an attack in Medan.
The police and Densus 88 are currently investigating the terror ring of the two perpetrators who attacked North Sumatra Police Headquarters.
