No Indonesian Among Victims in Istanbul Attack

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta-Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi has confirmed that there are no Indonesian citizens among the victims in the terrorist attack that ended with a suicide bombing at Ataturk Airport, Istanbul, Turkey, Tuesday evening local time, June 28, 2016.

“Based on the information from our two representatives [Indonesian Embassy in Ankara and Indonesian Consulate General in Istanbul], I was told that so far there are no Indonesian citizens among the victims,” Retno said at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.

She said that, she has made personal contact with the chairman of Indonesian Student Association (PPI) in Turkey who also said that there had been no Indonesian citizens among the victims.

She added that after the incident, the Deputy Consul General of the Republic of Indonesia in Istanbul had been in Ataturk Airport, checking some hospitals, and coordinating with local authorities to get more information on possible victims from Indonesia.

“On this occasion, the government would also like to recall all Indonesian citizens in Turkey to keep safe, improve vigilance, and avoid public spaces that could be the target of the next terrorist attack, and to keep track on the information and rules set by local authorities,” he said.

As of press time, the incident had killed 36 and wounded 147.

“The death toll could rise further. Since the incident, according to the SOP we have, we will immediately made contact with both Indonesian Embassy in Ankara and Indonesian Consulate General in Istanbul,” she said.
