TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has sanctioned a total of 240 civil servants found violating their commitments to neutrality during the 2024 general elections, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said on Monday, March 25, 2024.

"A total of 240 civil servants have been sanctioned for violating neutrality during the elections. An additional 180 cases are under review for potential sanctions," he remarked during a meeting with Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR).

He explained that the numbers were derived from a total of 450 neutrality violation reports received by the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu).

"Bawaslu received reports of neutrality violations by at least 450 civil servants," Karnavian pointed out.

He also remarked that five government officials had also been given sanctions in the form of compensation for breaking their oath of impartiality during the elections.

"Based on reports received by Bawaslu and the Ministry of Home Affairs as well as other kinds of evidence, including videos, we decided to punish five officials with sanctions of compensation," he stated.

Karnavian said that the five officials were found guilty of directing people to vote for certain candidates running in the elections.

"They were sanctioned due to their initiatives to gather support for certain candidates. It should be noted that these violations are not related only to a single pair of presidential candidates," he pointed out.

The meeting on Monday was also attended by officials from the General Elections Commission (KPU), Bawaslu, and the Ministry of Home Affairs to evaluate the holding of the 2024 general elections.
