TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG announced that the Vanuatu earthquake in the Pacific Ocean will not affect Indonesia.
The 6.5-magnitude earthquake in Vanuatu was located southwest of Vanuatu Islands on Tuesday at around 09:33 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesia Time). In detail, this earthquake was located 17.92 Southern Latitude and 168.01 Longitude West, a 35-kilometer distance to Port Vila-Vanuatu.
"The Vanuatu earthquake was shallow and caused by subduction activity where the Indo-Australian fault clashed under the pacific fault with 92 millimeters velocity per year," said the head of the Earthquake Center of BMKG Daryono from the release received by Tempo.
According to Daryono, the quake will not affect Indonesia. "The info from Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said the earthquake will not cause local tsunami around the epicenter," he added.
"Thus, coastal communities in Indonesia are urged to remain calm," Daryono concluded.
