Electoral Effect of Vice Presidential Debate Insignificant, Survey Reveals

27 December 2023 08:35 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Political Indicator (Indikator Politik Indonesia) released its latest survey post-vice presidential debate. According to the survey, supporters of each contesting candidates deem their respective contestant winner of the debate.

The main researcher of the Indonesia's Political Indicator Burhanuddin Muhtadi said that the partisan factor explained why voters are steadfast even after witnessing the vice presidential debate. "People watching the debate with their electoral faith intact," he said on Tuesday.

The survey revealed that over 74.1 percent of Anies-Muhaiming supporters deem Muhaimin Iskandar winner of the debate, while 67.8 percent of Prabowo Gibran supporters thinks Gibran Rakabuming Raka came out of the debate victorious, and 53.6 percent of Ganjar-Mahfud supporters believe Mahfud Md was the winner of the vice presidential debate.

However, Burhanuddin still believed that the debate was a critical factor to the 2024 general elections. Through the vice presidential debate, voters are able to understand the vision, mission, work plan, and the articulation of each candidate.

"However small, the electoral effect is present," he said.

According to Burhanuddin, only 18 to 23 percent swing voters were influenced by the debate. For the time being, Prabowo-Gibran lead with 46.7 percent followed by Ganjar-Mahfud with 24.5 percent and Anies-Muhaimin with 21 percent. However, the second and third place were inside the 2.9 percent margin of error.

The target population of this survey was Indonesian nationals aged 17 and up or having been married, owning a cellphone, around 83 percent of the total national population. The survey was conducted on Dec. 23-24, 2023.

Over 1217 respndents were chosen thorugh a combination of Random Digit Dialing for 265 respondents and Double Sampling for 952 respondents. The margin of error was estimated aroung 2.9 percent with 95 percent level of confidence. The interview with respondents were conducted through phone call by trained interviewers.

The vice presidential debate last friday faced Muhaimin Iskandar, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Mahfud Md on stage to debate various topics concerning the economy. The two moderators were Liviana Cherlisa and Alfito Deannova.
