TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The General Elections Commission (KPU) is set to hold the second debate this Friday night, December 22, featuring only vice presidential candidates: Muhaimin Iskandar, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Mahfud MD.
The KPU announced that the debate will run for approximately 150 minutes, including 30 minutes of commercial breaks. The three vice presidential candidates will have 120 minutes to deliver their views in six segments.
In the first segment, each candidate will be given four minutes to present their programs, vision, and mission. This will be followed by a question-and-answer session prepared by the panelists. Two minutes will be allotted to each candidate to answer a question that they draw. After that, the other two candidates will have one minute to respond, and then the first candidate will have another minute to address the other two candidates’ responses.
“The KPU will not interfere in directing the presidential and vice presidential candidates to answer what needs to be answered,” the KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari told journalists in the KPU on Thursday, Dec. 21.
Hasyim believed that all candidates were well-prepared for the debate and had mastered the issues highlighted for the debates. He denied any accusations of the agency’s bias towards one of the candidate pairs.
“As for the strategy, the depth [of issues], time extension to answer, we leave that entirely to the candidates, “ he stressed.
The KPU scheduled five election debates on various topics for the presidential and vice presidential candidates. Three debates are allocated for presidential candidates, and the remaining two are for vice presidential candidates.
The first debate was held on Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the KPU office, featuring only presidential candidates, namely Anies Baswedan, Prabowo Subianto, and Ganjar Pranowo. The topics were related to government, law, human rights, corruption, democracy, public service, and civil harmony.
The second debate will focus on issues related to the economy, finance, taxes, investment, trade, state and regional budgets, and infrastructure and take place at the Jakarta Convention Center, Central Jakarta.
