TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake in the Banda Sea, Maluku, was followed by 45 aftershocks recorded from Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023, at 11:52:53 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) to Thursday at 00:50:00 WIB.
“There were 45 aftershock activities with the largest magnitude of 6.8 after the main earthquake of magnitude 7.2,” Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said as quoted from Antara, on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023.
He explained that the quake at 00:25 WIB with a magnitude of 5.4 was a shallow one caused by deformation (earth's crust) activity at the seafloor of the Banda Sea. “The modeling results show that this quake has no tsunami potential,” he added.
The quake, however, caused tremors in the Amahai and Banda areas of Central Maluku and Kilmury in East Seram with an intensity scale of III MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), meaning the tremor was felt indoors like a passing truck.
“There have been no reports of damage caused by the quake thus far,” Daryono claimed.
He appealed to the public to avoid cracked or damaged buildings. “Check and make sure that the building you are staying in is earthquake-resistant enough, or has no damage from the shaking that will affect the building's stability before you return to the building,” Daryono stressed.
