TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Bantul Regency Tourism Agency is set to hold a lantern festival dubbed Lanterna Festival de Paris (LF de Paris) at Gumuk Pasir Parangtritis Beach, Yogyakarta on Saturday evening, October 7, 2023
“This event is a moment to introduce Gumuk Pasir and Parangtritis Beach as the main tourist attractions in Bantul Regency,” Bantul Tourism Agency head Kwintarto Heru Prabowo said in a press statement on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.
Gumuk Pasir Parangtritis is a sizeable unique ecosystem of sand dunes. It is the only Barchan dune in Southeast Asia. A Barchan dune is a rare crescent-shaped dune produced by the recurring natural cycle of soft sandy material from the mountains.
The lantern is planned to be lit and flown at 22:30 Western Indonesian Time (WIB), when there is no flight activity in the skies of Yogyakarta as permitted by the Air Traffic Control Authority or PLLU.
For safety reasons, the festival organizing committee also cooperated with the fire department and mobilized a number of fire trucks. Cleaning personnel will also be deployed to maintain the cleanliness of the event.
The Lantern Festival at Parangtritis Beach is an annual event that was suspended for two years in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival returned in 2022 with the flying of 1,001 lanterns.
