TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicted the dry season to end starting at the end of October, and the rainy season to start tentatively beginning November 2023.
However, due to the diversity of climate in Indonesia, the start of the rainy season will happen gradually. Meanwhile, the peak of the rainy season will occur from January to February 2024.
The head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati mentioned that, in accordance with BMKG's prediction, El Nino peaked in September. "However, as observed from the satellite data, the peak will last throughout October," Dwikorita said in Jakarta on October 3, 2023. El Nino is forecasted to last throughout the year.
A moderate level of El Nino will remain until February-March of 2024. Monsoon from Asia has started to enter Indonesia. Thus, Dwikorita expected rain to pour over Indonesia in November.
"Meaning, the effects of El Nino will lessen with the arrival of the rainy season, so hopefully the dry season could gradually end," she said.
Dwikorita also warned the public to avoid doing activities that trigger a wildfire. "Don't even try to trigger a fire accidentally or on purpose, since extinguishing the wildfire is difficult," she concluded.
